It couldn't wait to get my copy of 100 Places in Italy Every Woman Should Go (Travelers' Tales) by Susan Van Allen. Although it was published in 2009, I had just discovered it. It was the title that drew me in. Of course! There should be a guide just for women who want to travel to Italy! Why hadn't anyone thought of it before?!
First section. Divine goddesses, saints and the Blessed Virgin Mary. A celebration of women both painted and holy.
Great homes and gardens followed. Then the best beaches. Best spas. Shopping. Cooking classes. Crafts.
I didn't know where to dive in first, but being a foodie, I elected for the section called Indulge Your Tastebuds. The chapters are quick reads, and by the time I got to Chocolate I stopped. Great! She listed the best chocolate makers in Italy, and told you which towns to find them, and what to look for. I could definitely imagine a trip through Italy visiting chocolate manufacturers and stopping for the odd gelato here and there.
Loving antiques and flea markets, I visited that chapter. There was a recommendation to visit the Antique Market in Fossano, Piedmont. Here is the description, "Pros call this the best antique shopping spot in Italy. It's a huge indoor exhibition center, arranged to look like an old fortified town, where you'll find antiques, paintings, and crafts from all over the world."
Yoga retreats? Si! The author recommends three yoga retreats that are "divine".
Each chapter is a short compilation of recommendations, so this small paperback can be dropped into your bag when you travel to Italy. The only thing I would have wanted differently is that it had been sectioned by region, so that when you are traveling in that region, here are all of the things a woman would want to do. That said, this is a great little resource and will definitely be going in my bag when I travel to Italy next!
