I lived in France for over 11 years in a little village high in the hills above the Riviera called Bar sur Loup. It was wonderful because the location allowed me to drive over to Italy for lunch, or drive an hour and a half north to ski, or an hour to the west to shop in St. Tropez.
It was an ex-pat life that was easy due to the large population of English and Americans that live along the Riviera. Everyone spoke English.

The village of Bar sur Loup has one of the most beautiful settings of any village in France. It is stage set against a spectacular backdrop of the Gorge du Loup, and if you look up above the village you see yet another "village perche" perched high on a mountain so that in the dark of night it looks like a spaceship hovering. To frost the cake, Bar sur Loup has a castle. And that castle now has a hotel in it called L'Hostellerie du Chateau. There are only 5 rooms and 1 suite, all with great sweeping views.
It even has its own restaurant.
If you stay here, and I recommend that you do, you are perfectly placed to explore St. Paul de Vence, the perfume factories in Grasse, to visit the beach in Cannes, shop the open air market in Nice, even drive into Italy for lunch!
